![]() MyDefrag has an overwhelming array of options, though it's no longer maintained. ![]() Right now, the best free and still maintained defrag software is Ultradefrag. After opening it once or twice I could tell it can't do much. There's also Pirform's Defraggler as an option. Then I remembered Auslogics Disk Defrag was being given away for free that day (see how the operate?) and installed it. I have O&O Defrag installed but it wouldn't run yesterday - some message about a service or port being blocked. ![]() The only reason I spent some time in the past looking at defrag software is to push my Steam games folder to the front of the disk on my secondary drive. You probably don't even need to defrag outside of Windows doing its own thing. Unchecky also blocks known crapware domains in the Windows hosts file. I can't really vouch for its effectiveness because I've had it installed for the longest time, but all those bundleware toolbars are not checked by default in installers when I see them. If they don't land the hook they'll throw in some OpenCandy on the release. Auslogics/IObit/ DriverMaxUpdaterWizardUltimate cast a net and try to catch whoever they can. I think I see your hesitation - I suspect you've been hit with a few toolbars and Bonzi Buddies in the past. I can't find any factual evidence in the thread you linked that it's actually a trojan, besides anecdotal claims from the original poster's "sources." It's important to distringuish potentially unwanted programs and actual viruses, like a trojan. The original poster of the tread also invented the tinfoil hat - "my sources claim is a CIA front server." There were a few alternative defragment programs listed, too. Further in the thread someone quoted an Auslogics response where they said they dropped OpenCandy from the installer (but apparently now have their own crapware bundled). I'm running the latest version of ESET Smart Security (10) and had no alerts. The thread makes mention of ESET detecting it. Since Malwarebytes has it under its own entry that's letting me know it's a known thing/prevelant. I just checked the logs - 6 hits from the installer and extracted files, all labeled as. I only bothered to see it was being flagged as PUP. I updated to 4.8.1.0 yesterday by coincidence and Malwarebytes (old version, not the garbage v.3) was popping up like crazy.
